Anna - Having a Life Without Chronic Hip Pain is Within My Grasp.
Ever since leaving school I have been an extremely active person. A group fitness instructor and a keen runner, I find myself doing something vigorous almost every day. In August 2008, this all came to an abrupt end when I was told I had a cyst in my femoral head (thigh bone) which was the reason why I had been experiencing chronic hip pain for almost a year. A hip operation at the age of 26 had me out of the game for many months. Telling a fitness instructor, and someone who loves to train that they cannot exercise for 2 months is cruel. Whilst the original hip injury had healed after the operation, I was left with scar tissue from the operation itself that caused even more pain than before. At this time, a friend told me about this yoga practice called Bikram. I was skeptical, afraid and it took several months of convincing and coercion for me to commit to my first class.
I fell in love. In love with the challenge of doing yoga in 40º heat for 90 minutes. I fell in love with the way it made me feel, with the changes I noticed in my flexibility, core strength, determination and most importantly in my mind. For 1 year, I continued to struggle with my hip. Every time I went down into standing bow, I could feel the hip flexors resisting, telling me to stop. But I continued. Determined to one day say that I could do the standing bow and experience no discomfort.
Well, 2 weeks ago I had a breakthrough. For the first time since my hip surgery I felt no more incredible discomfort. Some postures are still uncomfortable for me, but I see the improvement, and I feel the difference. Every practice I do, I know that I am slowly being healed. Healed because the practice is teaching my muscles how to relax around my hip joint, how to contract correctly during exercise, strengthening my muscles on both sides equally and stimulating new tendon and muscle growth in the affected area.
I cannot describe how amazing Fitzroy Hot Yoga is, and how much it has changed my outlook on life. Now, running the marathon again does not seem impossible. Having a life without chronic hip pain is within my grasp.
I thank all the incredibly dedicated and disciplined teachers at Fitzroy’s Bikram Yoga studio. If you are thinking about taking up Bikram and are afraid, don’t be. Have faith and strength to give it a go. It might just change your life...
