Teacher Profile: Kawther
How long have you been teaching Bikram yoga?
I've been teaching yoga since 2010.
What was the hardest pose for you to learn?
The most challenging posture for me was first Backward Bending. I would have difficulty breathing and feel like I was about to black-out. It wasn't until later that I learnt that lifting the chest and pushing hips and stomach forward towards the mirror makes all the difference. Key: Letting go of that fear of falling over.
What is your favourite pose and why?
The posture I fell in love from day one was Standing Bow Pulling Pose. My friends like to call it Sleek Ninja Pose.
What's your favourite thing about Bikram yoga compared to other styles of yoga?
It wasn't until I had tried Bikram Yoga that I could say I really enjoyed yoga. The structure and the focus required in the hot room makes everything else in your life dissolve away for 90 minutes.
What's the most common thing you see students doing wrong?
I don't see students doing things 'wrong' per say. Whatever they are doing is part of the process, and every student progresses in their own way. Before becoming a teacher I remember being intimidated by the front rows of students doing postures 'perfectly'. Avoid underestimating your abilities. Give yourself a push to go even a centimetre deeper into a posture every class, you'll be surprised. Always breath.
What is something (unrelated to yoga) that we would be surprised to know about you?
I recently joined the Women's Circus. Yes, yoga does come in handy in unexpected ways.
